Why does it rain? Where does the water
come from? Will it rain or snow tomorrow? Can I walk on clouds? These
are just a few of the hundreds of questions your students have about
the weather. With the activities in this STC unit, your students have
the opportunity to explore various weather features and discover how
weather affects their lives.
After an initial class brainstorm about
weather, you'll quickly move on to weather observations, encouraging
students to use all their senses. Using a weather calendar, students
will daily record weather data including
- Wind
- Temperature
- Precipitation
- Cloud Cover
Using various tools, your students will make
their own weather observations and compare them to official
forecasts. With the Weather unit, your students engage in a variety
of activities:
- Creating flags for measuring wind
speed.
- Building and using rain gauges.
- Making model thermometers and learning to
use real ones.
- Learning to recognize the major categories
of clouds.
- Creating "puddles" and investigating what
happens to them.
- Experimenting with the water repellency of
various fabrics.
In the final lesson, your students tally the
information recorded on their weather calendars. Then they will
sharpen their analytical skills as they experiment with different
ways of categorizing and using the information.
