Salmon return from the ocean to the same streams where the fish were born. Here the fish spawn and produce the next generation. The female digs a nest in the gravel bed and deposits her eggs. In western Oregon it takes about six weeks from the time the eggs are fertilized until the newborns emerge. While the gravel is the incubator, it's in the woody debris where the juvenile salmon grow and develop before heading out to sea.
